Chapter 14

SOPHIA GLARED AT ME AS I LOWERED THE CHAIRLIFT bar. “So, what gives?”

I just shook my head. “What are you talking about?”

“I thought we were going skiing with your boyfriend. But I haven’t seen you with anyone.”

“That’s not true. You saw me with Pug a few minutes ago.”

Sophia waved a dismissive hand. “You know what I meant. Where’s Michael?”

I pointed over my shoulder. “On the chair behind us.”

She turned to look. “I only see Ethan and Pug.”

I nodded. “Exactly.”

Her confused look was comical, but she didn’t seem to appreciate my laughter. “I don’t get it.”

I sighed. “You realize Pug’s real name isn’t Pug, right?”

“Well, yeah. It’s—” She looked at me with wide eyes, her mouth opening and closing a few times as she repeatedly glanced between me and the chair behind us. “You and Pug?”

I nodded.

“When? How? I thought you hated him.”

I sighed. “I’m starting to not to. It’s . . . complicated.”

She narrowed her eyes at me. “You’ve got three minutes.”

“When we were in Vermont—”

“This has been going on since Vermont?” Sophia’s exclamation practically echoed in the darkness.

Behind us, Ethan laughed. “I guess you told her?”

Sophia turned around the best she could. “You knew?”

He held up his free hand in defense, his poles in the other. “Just found out today.”

With a huff, Sophia turned back around. “Vermont. So, are you sleeping with him?”

I sighed. “No. I’m not. And I have no intention to. And he knows that.”

“Yeah? And how long is that going to last?”

“Sophia, I can’t talk to you if you’re going to be all huffy.”

She glared at me. “You’re sleeping with your sworn enemy and then not telling me about it. Sorry if I’m a little huffy.”

I pursed my lips. “I’m not sleeping with him.”

“Of course you are. It’s Pug.”

“See, this is exactly why I didn’t want to tell anyone. If my best friend doesn’t believe me, the entire school is going to think we’re sleeping together.” I did my best to bury my head in my hands, although with my poles on my wrists, it was a little difficult.

I heard Sophia sigh beside me. “You’re really not?”

I turned to her. “How long have we known each other?”

“Kindergarten?”

“Do you really think I would sleep with someone I just started seeing?”

“But it’s Pug. You’ve known him longer than me.”

“And I’ve hated him for a long time.”

She narrowed her eyes. “That’s true. Why don’t you hate him anymore?”

“Because I’m starting to see him differently. And I’m kind of liking what I see.”

Sophia didn’t respond right away. She lifted the bar, placing her pole straps on her wrists before turning to me. “You will tell me, right? If things change?”

Rolling my eyes, I scooted forward in my seat. “Of course.”

I pushed myself off the lift with enough momentum to carry me down the hill toward the beginner trail. A plastic rope blocked my path. Pug skied beside me a moment later.

“I was wondering if they were going to close it.”

I could feel my chest tightening. I was having trouble breathing.
